Another great fourth of July parade in beautful downtown Turner (pronounced Tuhneh).

And Ava and Iris were in the parade this year!

Evvie took a few serous whacks at the pinata, but when the candy came crashing down, she explained why she wasn't among the children in the fray: "Daddy, I got lots of candy in the parade, so I don't need that candy". Nice.

Here's a cute video form the beginning of the festival before all the madness and crowds began.

After the excitement, A little pony named Faith gave the family a ride bac to our car. Fun!

Grandma Sue and Grampa Jim came north for Evelyn's dance recital on Saturday. She started excited for the rehearsal, and didn't stop her excitement until all was well over. In Evvie's words, "I want to do that a hundred and a million more times!"

Children's Museum

Tuesday was a reta day to go to te Children's Museum with the kids. FAMILY FIELD TRIP! We spent hours and hours there, doing some of the following:

Both kids were super-serious about their face paint.

They played for quite awhile in the vet room, giving shots, locking animals in their cages and knocking them on the floor. The usual stuff.

Evelyn got temporarily thrown in the Brig by some pirates, but don't worry, Levie saved her.

After that, we headed to the Deering Oaks for a picnic lunch (including oranges).

Bradbury Mountain Hike

We took a nice family hike at Bradbury Mountain State Park this weekend. It was pretty foggy at the top, but the kids both surprised us with their stamina. (Of course it's not a long hike, but they're little). Levi was especially into the climbing and just motored up the thing. Check out the video to hear him chatter about it.

Smith Visit: Reid Day

A brisk day at the beach didn't keep us from having a great time. We had a cookout at a charcoal pit and then, elieve it or not, played in the waves.

Some waves were avoided...
...some were not!

Levi's lips tell us it's time to head back to the cars. We're soooo looking forward to this same spot IN AUGUST!

Thomas Point on the Boy's 2nd Birthday

It was Levi's true birthday, but we didn't really tell him that. We were waiting for his SMith cousins to visit next week to really celebrate, so Grampa and Grammy Prince came down for a low-key excursion to Thomas Point Beach.

New Hampshire end of season

We took a great weekend trip to visit Nate, SUzanne & baby Amelia, and squeezed in what would end up being the last ski of the year. The kids squeezed together into a shared pulka when Evelyn got tired. A few M&M's late ans she was god to go, skiing about 3 miles by herself!

Day 1:
Diner to Roaring Brook
12.5 miles

Well, we set off after a big greasy diner breakfast to the wilds of the great north woods. Jed had been pretty ill the day before and had slept poorly that night. He made the call to ski with us for awhile, but to scrap the through-the-park plan. And then there were four.

I decided to add an old-school Maine license plate to my sled to give it a bit of personality. Weight: 45 pounds.

We finally made it in with daylight to spare, so we settled in and began to hear the firsthand stories of the kid they airlifted from the mountain three days before. He spent the night blow off Pomola peak & partially dug in- fIred a few shots so they could find him. Was later cited for having a handgun in the park.

Why Joe dragged a ponykeg in 14 miles, I didn't know...until I tasted my first really well-earned beer. In a frosted pint glass, thanks to Greg.

Day 2:
Roaring Brook to Russell Pond
7.5 miles

We started on skis, but quickly switched to snowshoes to break the trail up Pogy notch to Russell Pond.

The going was difficult at times with a few tough gully crossings. We kept joking that at 8 miles, this was supposed to be our rest day. Turned out to be the toughest of the four.

Day 3:
Russell Pond to South Branch
9 miles

The crew as we gear up for day three.

We finished at SOuth Branch as a squall moved in. Made for really fun conditions. We skiied in it all- bright sun, overcast, snow squall...a true winter adventure.

At the bunkhouse, a moose had taken up residence and found the best winter sutenence outside the outhouse door. Here Joe braves a close encounter to visit the icy cold seat.

Amazingly, there's still beer to enjoy at the end of day 3.

Day 4:
South Branch to Matagammon Gate
14 miles

Sunrise over South Branch. Tranquility.

Fresh tracks in fresh powder on the trail out. Coyote?

All the way past the gate, we encounter this...just this on the side of the road.
Huh?

After a round of cribbage and sandwiches, Jed arrived to pick us up for the ride out. The trailer looked like is had been muddin'.

It was good practice for their excursion to Sadie's birthday party where all the girls went to see the "Princesses on Ice". This dad was grateful that his daughter could experience a show that she was really into- without having to be subjected to the syrupy Disney-ness himself.

While "helping" me shovel the deck, Levi discovered the magic of icicles. This is icicle #3 of about 50 that he sampled. He likes biting the tips until he can't crunch them anymore. For this reason, I'm perplexed as to why he likes them so big that he can't even hold them himself.

Skiing at Bradbury Mountain

We took a family excursion to Brabury mountain in the powdery January snow. Evvie growing more comfortable on her skis, and we bribe her to go a little further, and a little further with an M&M every other trail blaze. It works well, although she pokes along, so one of us gets to ski swiftly ahead and then turn around and come back to take M&M detail with the girl.

It's fun to be out in the winter!

Another Beach Cookout

Not willing to let go of summer, we headed back to Reid with Grammie & Grampa Prince for another beach day and cookout. Evvie climbed the rocks a lot, and this time the clear visibility gave us quite a view.

We clowned on the beach for awhile, then headed back to our favorite spot to grill more corn, weenies, garlic bread and burgers..

Evelyn took a major digger onto an unforgiving rock to nearly cut our dinner off before it began. She's got a golf-ball sized welt, but a positive attitude. Maybe I'll post pics, but right now they just seem sensational. I prefer this quiet and pensive photo instead:

We had a nice afternoon and dinner cookout down at Reid State Park to mark the end of the relaxing season as school gears up again and daycare/ preschool logistics again slurp any lazy aimlessness from our lives.

It was a great foggy afternoon for the beach.

As the afternoon wore on, it was time to fire up the grill and get the corn and dogs on. Levi offered a helping hand.

We headed across Penobscot Bay to Isleboro to see our friends Erin and Adam. After a slight delay- made it in time for the 10 o'clock ferry, but there was no room to get on. We played on Lincolville beach, we peered off the pier, but the most fun was boarding the ferry and letting Levi drive.

A few sausages, salads, beers, and cookies later, it was scavenging time in the tidepools.

We took our annual trip to the Mine State Aquarium this Wednesday. It's a big hit with the kids, and LEvi made the "smack smack" fishy sound pretty much the entire time.

Evvie checks out a couple of backlit skate eggs.

It was a gorgeous day to make crayon rubbings, feel the seashells, hold starfish and stroke the sea cucumbers. The highlight of the day was me finally overcoming my fear of the friendly dog sharks. I stroked them at last, and so did Evvie and Levi.

Whew. Big brave dad.

After an hour inside, it was time for a picnic and a photo-op.

God, I love summer.

Camping: the final installment

Well by the final morning, Evelyn was one pooped camper. She offered to help us pack up, but then sank into a deep sleep by the van.

This, by the way, is what all of us wanted to be doing by the final day.

We took one final dip and then headed home. Evvie was wonderful on the water at the campground- taking four or five opportunities to swim with us to a raft and slip off the rocks that hid beneath the surface of the water. Her confidence in the water exploded during this trip and we were happy to have such easy access to a good swimming lake.

Camping: Day 2.5

Well, the impetus of our vacation was a new young tot named Amelia- born in June. Suzanne and Nate live just a stone;s throw from our campsite, so we took an afternoon to play some croquet, eat some ribs, and partake in some jovial conversation.

Evelyn was so sweet with little Amelia, She said she couldn't remember Levi being such a small baby, She watched Amelia sleep, she watched her feed, she watched her yawn and stare. Evvie most enjoyed stroking Amelia's cheek and hearing her say "ahhh".

Woke up, got some grub and hen headed to StoryLand!

Evelyn was excited about Alice- her newest literary obsession thanks to the library.

Next up was Cinderella's castle, complete with pumpkin-carriage ride back down the hill to the big swan boats.

In the middle of the park, Levi found his dreamland- about 2,000 foam balls with vacuum tubes, launchers, baskets that dropped, and loads of fun!

Evvie even developed the courage to stick her head in a lion's mouth!

Then ride in some flying dutch shoes with dad.

And of course, her first roller coaster...excuse me. POLAR coaster. Evelyn rode this four times in a row, and was sure to visit again as the last ride before we left. A budding thrill-seeker? She takes after her mom.

FIrst Camping Trip

Well I crossed over into my late thirties in style. We loaded up the minivan, the kids, and the good cheer and headed to a campground for three nights of dirt, bugs and fire!

After Downtown Turnah's wicked awesome 4th of July Parade, we celebrated in the usual way- way too much Strawberry shortcake.

The Fair at Heritage Days

Ahhh, those portable carnivals that make us all so giddy and nervous. We walked round, taking in the carnies, the generator roar, and the back street bustle. Evelyn finally got up the nerve to ride the carousel, followed by a balloon excursion. It was only after some cotton candy that she worked up the nerve to ride the ferris wheel. We tried not to pressure her, but she had ben talking and talking about the ferris wheel since we read Charlotte's Web together. (Fern rides with Henry Fussey at the County Fair where Wilbur wins a special prize. She's smitten with...the Ferris Wheel.)

By the way, E.B. White has it right. Read Charlotte's web to your kids. There's the "hard facts of farm life" very real fear and acceptance of death, change, living life to its fullest, greed, friendship, the miracle of everyday life... It's such a non-schmaltzy kids story that doesn't protect kids from life, and exposes them to big words and concepts. Five thumbs up. (When you wave them around it looks like more are there).

A New Playground

Well, it was Evvie's idea to stop by the Phippsburg Elementary playground on our way home from the beach, but it was Levi that seemed to take fullest advantage of the slides. He's always loved them, but never attempted them on his own!

Aahhhhhh summer vacation. I took the kids to the beach for a bit o'sun, fun in the fort, and some seaweed collection.

Actually, Evvie was just clowning around. The seaweed is for mulch in the garden. It keeps away the slugs and snails- they won't climb on it when it's dry and sharp. Ahhh. First day of summer, so we took the kids to Popp's for some strawberry picking. Evvie was a big help. Levi...less so, but he enjoyed getting sticky!

April Vacation. We boarded the train in Portland and stepped off in Boston to check out the aquarium. Evvie loved the clown fish and the penguins. Grammie and Grampa hosted a wonderful day!
Levi loved the activity on the harbor....and then ice cream!
